June is National Smile Month!

We're just a couple of hours away from June, and for our staff at Alexander & Alexander Orthodontics, that means only one thing: June is National Smile Month, and it's once again time to remind our patients to maintain a healthy mouth by brushing, flossing, practicing good nutrition and visiting their general dentist regularly (as well as visiting our office) to avoid cavities and gum disease, among other dental issues.

Here are a few easy steps you can improve your oral health at home so you can celebrate National Smile Month for many years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during treatment.
* Visit your dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call at 469-619-0600! We hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend!

Drs. Cliff and Moody want to know: Do you know where your retainers are?

If you've recently completed your treatment at Alexander & Alexander Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed successfully, Drs. Cliff or Moody Alexander will provide—or have provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Drs. Alexander is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment at Alexander & Alexander Orthodontics, we encourage you to read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call at (469) 293-9664!

Enjoy the upcoming week!!

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month!

Did you know the month of May is designated National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? In 1983, President Reagan encouraged Americans to incorporate more activity into their lives, and the reminder is even more significant in this day and age, as kids everywhere are distracted more and more by television, social networking and video games.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that teens exercise for at least one hour each day of moderate intensity physical activity (such as playing sports or brisk walking) or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity (jogging, dancing and jumping rope).

At Alexander & Alexander Orthodontics, we always encourage our patients to stay fit by exercising or participating in sports. We want to remind you, however, to always wear a mouth guard or other forms of facial protection when playing sports. To learn more about how often your child should exercise, we recommend you check out this series of helpful articles about kids and exercise, courtesy of our friends at KidsHealth.org.
